Description

Roselyn Snead

I was born in the Staffordshire Moorlands in a village called Ipstones and attended Leek Art School on a foundation course from 1975 to 1978. In 1982 I studied on a BA hons Multidisciplinary Design course where I specialised in illustration. After graduating in 1985 I became a freelance designer and exhibited my work at the New Year Designers Exhibition at Top Drawer Gift Fair in London.

My life went down a different path when my first child was born in 1986 and my son in 1988. During these years I began teaching art and other subjects including GCSE art and BTEC art to young people and adults in colleges, HMP, a secure unit, pupil referral unit, children’s medical centre and Independent School. Some of the young people I taught had emotional, behavioural, medical and mental health issues, or autism which was very challenging at times! I’ve also delivered childrens art workshops in The Potteries Museum and art gallery, EXCITE Art courses for children at Derby College and ran my own children’s Saturday art courses.

Since I qualified as an Art Psychotherapist at the University of Derby where my artwork was exhibited I have followed a different path to deliver ‘Art for Well Being’ courses for the WEA to adults with learning difficulties and disabiities, mental health issues, brain injuires, dementia etc, I have delivered GP referral therapeutic art courses for South Staffs College for adults with medical and mental health issues, facilitated art sessions at Borderland Voices Art for Health and Well Being mental health charity, delivered an art programme for post 16 students at The Padley Development Centre homeless charity in Derby. Last year I planned and delivered art sessions for The Friends of Stonefield park for adults with learning difficulties and disabilties. As a qualified art therapist I’m registered with HCPC and BAAT and available for individual and group therapy.

My artwork has been exhibited at The University of Derby, The Brampton Museum and Art Gallery, and J2 gallery space in Newcastle -Under-Lyme, The Nicholson Institute Open Art Exhibition in Leek. In 2015 I was commissioned as lead artist by Lichfield Library Service who secured funding from the Arts Council to deliver art sessions for 100 children from local primary schools. The Alice in Wonderland themed art project was exhibited at the library where officials including the Mayor of Lichfield along with parents and teachers were invited. This year I was due to be involved with Stone Art Trail but due to lockdown had to be cancelled so I am grateful for this opportunity to exhibit my artwork at The Flying Ducks Art Gallery.
I am currently a self-employed private art tutor for adults and children but due to lockdown now provide online art lessons. As an artist/illustrator my work has varied in subject matter, style and themes over the years including a whole range of angel inspired ideas for greetings cards and other products including an illustrated children’s book ‘The Christmas Angel’. I mostly use watercolour and acrylics for my paintings and illustrations with the addition of gold paint for some. I have always been drawn the magical and mystical in my artwork exploring different cultures. Like many other artists I have explored personal life experiences which has informed ideas for my artwork. More recently I have been drawn to paint the natural landscape, dragonflies and animals such as foxes which have personal meaning. I am very much influenced by Native American Indian animal totems, symbols and images that I have had in dreams or meditations.
Some of the artwork I have produced this year on the theme of ‘Home’ was for Grayson Perry’s Channel 4 Art Club programme which I submitted. You are welcome to see this artwork on my website    www.artbyrose.co.uk
